HOLY FAMILY SOUP KITCHEN - Tuesday, December 08, 2009

The former St. Bart’s Soup Kitchen (now known as Holy Family Soup Kitchen) will mark its 25th year serving meals to the underserved in our community at 914 8th Street, site of the former St. Bart’s school.  What began on December 13, 1984 with 11 guests at our first community meal has swelled to an average of 165 meals per day.  Last year we served 29,854 meals to the needy, which was an additional 150 meals per month compared to 2007.  This year the increase has been even greater.  In addition to our regular guests from the area, we also serve 42 nightly meals to residents of the homeless shelter located in the upper two levels of our building.  Every Thursday, we also prepare meals for 15 men living in transitional housing at the Staben Center on McAlister Street in Waukegan, about a mile from our site.

It takes a large number of volunteers and reliable sources of food to provide meals Wednesday through Saturday evenings (5:30 pm - 6:30 pm) for so many individuals.   Volunteers come from many churches throughout Lake County.  Presently, we have 30 wonderful volunteer teams made up of 300-plus individuals, reinforced with students from neighboring high schools and parishes and other teens and adults.  Our fresh food sources come from surplus commodities that include stores such as Whole Foods in Deerfield, Trader Joe’s in Northbrook, Eloise Chicago Bakery in Vernon Hills, Sunset Foods in Northbrook, Starbucks in Libertyville, Bills’ Pizza & Pub in Diamond Lake and Third Lake, the Liberty Restaurant in Libertyville and the Peacock Restaurant in Waukegan.   We also purchase food from the Northern Illinois Food Bank, Aldi’s, and Sam’s Club.  Food donations are always welcome.

We welcome any guest to our evening meals – no questions asked – and we welcome any volunteer that is interested in serving the needs of those who find their way through our door for a meal to comfort their body and soul.  Homelessness and hunger will always be among us, but together we can make a difference.  We are most grateful for the food and financial support of your parish that helps to make our work possible.  Thank you for enabling us to provide nutritious meals to so many needy individuals in our community
