This world-wide lay movement of the Roman Catholic Church began in Spain in the 1940s. The word cursillo means “short course.” The full name is “Cursillo de Cristiandad” or “short course in Christian living.” Cursillo begins with a three-day weekend retreat (the cursillo) during which a series of talks are given by both laity and clergy. The retreat provides an opportunity to encounter Christ through the Eucharist, prayer, discussion, reflections, and community-building. Cursillo develops a consciousness that we, as laity, are called to be disciples for Christ and leaders in His Church. Cursillo emphasizes the importance of living a life balanced in holiness, continues spiritual formation, and evangelization. Following the three-day retreat, your are invited to join a small Catholic Christian community made up of others who have experienced the weekend. This small faith community meets regularly, usually weekly or bi-weekly, to provide strength, support, and accountability in your daily life (the 4th day) as you grow in faith and develops your particular ministry.
